The African Union (AU) has deployed observers to monitor the 9 August general elections in Kenya.
“Following an invitation from the Government of the Republic of Kenya to the African Union to monitor the forthcoming general election “Observing the election scheduled for August 9, 2022, the African Union Commission is sending an international election expert mission to Kenya consisting of eight expert teams,” said a statement on June 27.
The teams are to the elections in Kenya assess preparations, political dynamics and fairness of the election campaigns.
“The core team will continue to monitor the election preparations, assess the political dynamics and the actual competitiveness and fairness of the election campaigns, and maintain regular contact with national and international stakeholders , during and after the elections,” the AU said.
The AU will also send another observer team to the elections for a few weeks and later depending en week further short-term observers ahead of election day.
The Common Market for East and Southern Africa and the East African Community deployed a joint high-level pre-election assessment mission in early May to ensure non-violent, fair and credible elections , which will strengthen Kenya’s democratic process.
