Covid-19: Tanzania receives nearly 500,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine

Tanzania received 499,590 doses of the Pfizer vaccine from the US government on Tuesday as part of the Covax initiative.

The shipment landed at the international airport Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam and was presented to Minister of Health Dorothy Gwajima by the US Ambassador to Tanzania, Donald Wright.

“Today we received 499,590 doses of Pfizer that will protect 249,795 Tanzanians “, Dr Gwajima said.

The country previously received 1,227,400 doses of the Janssen vaccine and 2,578,400 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, she added.

So far, 1,359,624 citizens have been fully vaccinated, of whom 988,293 received one dose of the Janssen vaccine from Johnson & Johnson and the remainder two doses of the Sinopharmjab, said Dr. Gwajima.

Another371 .331 citizens have received a dose of the Sinopharm vaccine and are waiting for the second dose d dose, she added.

The US ambassador said his administration would continue to work with African nations to fight the disease.

Dr. Wright added that the US is aware of the Tanzanian government’s ongoing efforts to combat Covid-19. He urged citizens to get vaccinated and continue to take precautions against the pandemic.
