DR Congo shuts border to Rwanda after soldier shot dead

The Democratic Republic of the Congo closed its border with Rwanda hours earlier after a Congolese soldier was shot dead while attacking border guards in Rwandan territory.

The border closure is the latest escalation of a diplomatic crisis that has Things have erupted between the two neighbors since rebels accused of supporting the DRC of supporting Rwanda launched a major offensive in eastern Congo last month to support leaders whose leadership is from the Tutsi ethnic group, or to have sent troops to eastern Congo.

The Congolese government has ordered the border with Rwanda, according to a statement from the South Kivu governor’s office on Friday from 15:00 local time (1300 GMT) instead of the daily closing time of 22:00.

Two Rwandan police officers were injured when the Congolese S oldat crossed the border and opened fire before an officer showed up. The service fired back, killing him 25 meters inside Rwanda, the Rwandan military said in a statement.

The Congolese government said it is investigating the incident.
