Five dead as Somalia capital hit by huge explosion

At least five people died and 23 others were injured when a huge explosion early Thursday in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, triggered a cloud of smoke that rose from the site of the explosion amid gunfire, officials and a Reuters witness said p> “So far we know that five people died and 23 others were injured,” Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Aamin Ambulance Services, told Reuters.

The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab led the attack targeted a passing United Nations convoy, Abdiasis Abu Musab, the group’s military operations spokesman told Reuters.

The explosion near the K4 intersection in the heart of Mogadishu was so large that the Walls of nearby Mucassar. Elementary and secondary schools collapsed and cars were left mutilated.

“We were rocked by the pressure of the explosion and then numb from the gunfire that followed,” said Mohamed Hussein, a nurse at the nearby Osman Hospital.

He added that it was pulled out of the rubble of a collapsed ceiling.

“Our hospital walls collapsed. Opposite us is a school that collapsed as well. I don’t know how many died, “he said.

Security officials were not immediately available for comment.

Al Shabaab has been fighting Somalia’s central government for years to found its own on the basis of its strict rules Interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

The group is waging war in Somalia and elsewhere against the Somali military and the African Union-mandated Amisom force in defense of the central government.
