Michael Olunga, the captain of the Kenyan national team Harambee Stars, became the top scorer of the 2021 Champions League of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after the end of the tournament on Tuesday.
Al Hilal. from Saudi Arabia won the trophy for the fourth time.
The center forward scored nine goals in this year’s 40-team tournament, which took place between April 14 and November 23. He scored all of his goals in West Region Group “C” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Olunga, 27, made his ACL debut with a goal in Al Duhail’s 2-0 win over Iraqi club Al Shorta on April 15th
He then scored in a 1-1 draw against Al Alhi Saudi (April 18th), scored in a 4-3 victory over the Iranian giant Esteghlal (April 21) a hat trick, two goals in a 2-2 win against Esteghlal (April 24).
He then scored one goal in a 2-1 loss to Al Shorta and once against Al Ahli Saudi when the Qatar Giants in the group stage were eliminated at Esteghlal’s expense.
Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia defeated Esteghlal 2-0 in the round of 16, Persepolis (Iran) 3-0 in the quarter-finals, his compatriot Al Nassr with 2: 1 in the semifinals before beating South Korean team Pohang Steelers 2-0 in the final.
In the top scorer charts, Olunga ended his first season in the AFC Champions League with a goal ahead of the Brazilian Gustavo von Jeonbuk Hyun dai Motors, closely followed by team-mate Modou Barrow from Gambia (six goals).
Al Duhail is also in the 2022 Champions League after finishing second behind Al Sadd in the 2021-2022 Qatar Stars League has.
