Nine people were killed and 10 are still missing after a boat capsized on Tuesday in Pemba, Tanzania. Six more were rescued after the incident.
The tragedy occurred when the boat, which is said to have transported around 30 to 40 people on the way to a funeral, capsized in Mitte the trip.
Pemba South Police Commander Richard Thadei confirmed the incident and said that the boat that was en route from Chekacheka to Panza Island did not reach its destination.
He said the cause of the accident could not be determined immediately, but ruled out bad weather. The captain of the boat has yet to be located.
“So far, nine bodies have been recovered and taken to the regional hospital for medical examination so that delivery to their families can continue,” said he.
