Every year we greet each other with the eternal salutation – Happy New Year. This is more of a declaration of hope, but what will make it new for the individual is much more than the calendar change.
Years ago, the names that echoed all over the business world were Adnan Khashoggi, Paul J Getty, Aristotle Onassis and others. In Africa, Chief M.K.O. Abiola of Nigeria the reference point for prosperity. On the entertainment front, there was music from Brothers Johnson, Kool & The Gang, and African icons like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. They played in crowded stadiums and huge venues around the world.
Many people today do not know these names and they prove what Jesus meant. The fact that you were great in one era is not a guarantee that you will be great or relevant in another. So relevance is a personal choice.
One speaker showed us where the next generation of billionaires will appear during the sessions titled “Blockchain, Crypto, Web3 and the Metaverse”.
To be honest, most of the webinar attendees were in the dark about his pitch. He even told us about NFTs – non-fungible tokens, which are defined as a unique and non-exchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain, a form of digital ledger. Even the definition didn’t make sense to many of us. He also talked about things like Ethereum and confused us even more.
In the early days of the internet age, experts refused. They said it wouldn’t work and so few paid any attention to it. Now, with what you know today, imagine that you had the opportunity to go back to the very beginning. Think about the possibilities the internet offers. Think of titans like Amazon and Google who saw the potential of the internet before many and got involved with it.
What if you were the one who recognized the Internet’s potential as a game changer and created a platform like YouTube? Or did you know at the very beginning what Google or Amazon could do before others understood the upcoming revolution?
With that in mind, you will now understand the possibilities we are now in Blockchain, Crypto, Web3 and others have metaverse. Fortunately, everyone agrees that we are only at the beginning. It’s just getting started, and therefore those who are able to unlearn and relearn for old age will be the Googles and Amazons of the future.
Do you remember Hotmail? In the early days, most of us had either a Hotmail or Yahoo email address. Now Hotmail started on July 4, 1996 with $ 300,000 on loan. It was sold to Microsoft on December 31, 1997 (just 18 months later) for $ 400 million.
In the book Cracking the Millionaire Code, Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen write of Steve Jurveston, the venture capital partner that got him the initial $ 300,000.
Experts laughed at his cherished growth plans and he was laid off, just as many people dismiss what is happening today with Blockchain, Crypto, Web 3 and the Metaverse.
Happy New Year. Stay with me on this journey of unlearning and relearning to stay relevant and realize the great new opportunities in the new era.
