SADC heads of state set to review progress of its mission in Mozambique

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will hold a virtual extraordinary summit of Heads of State and Government on Friday to review the progress and mandate of the SADC Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM), the regional bloc, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the chairman of SADC, will chair the extraordinary summit.

Other meetings expected before the Friday Summit include the meeting of the experts of the Intergovernmental Defense and Security Committee and the meeting of senior officials of the Organ Ministerial Committee.

The Organ Extraordinary Committee of Ministers, the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Organ Troika, the Extraordinary Finance Committee and the Extraordinary Council of Ministers of the SADC will also meet.

SAMIM was established in July 2021 after approval by the extraordinary S. deployed ADC Summit of Heads of State and Government in Maputo as SADC’s regional response to support Mozambique in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in some districts of Cabo Delgado province.

Ahead of the extraordinary summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, chairman of SADC’s political, defense and security cooperation organ, will convene an extraordinary summit of SADC organ troika on Wednesday, attended by heads of state and government of organ troika members; Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, in which the Republic of Mozambique will participate.

The declaration goes on to say that, among other key issues, support for the effective implementation of the SAMIM aims to bring peace and stability to Cabo Delgado.

Since October 2017, Al-Shabab rebels have attacked numerous villages, killing more than 2,500 people and causing extensive destruction made civil property and infrastructure, including schools and health centers in the province of Cabo Delgado.

Since April 2020, more than 800,000 people have been displaced following an escalation of violence.

In accordance with the SADC Treaty, the SADC Summit is responsible for the general political direction and control of the functions of the community and ultimately makes it the political institution of the SADC.
