The Somali parliament unanimously confirmed Hamza Abdi Barre as the next prime minister on Saturday, signaling the start of a new government under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The lower house with 275 MPs in their chambers, the Villa Hargeisa , elected and supported Mr. Barre, an MP representing Kismayu in Jubbaland State.
Mr. Barre replaces Hussein Roble to become the 21st Prime Minister of Somalia. He will have the power to appoint the Council of Ministers, senior government officials and even ambassadors, all accountable to Parliament.
President Mohamoud nominated his longtime friend on June 15 and introduced him at his official residence, Villa Somalia and called on lawmakers to support him.
Out of 275 MPs, 220 MPs were present in the Chamber and all voted for Mr Barre without objection or abstention.
< Spokesman Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur ' Madobe' announced the unanimous decision. "I hereby announce that all 220 MPs present in the chamber voted for Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre," he said.
Mr Barre, 48, told MPs he would form an inclusive cabinet. “I will form a broad-based government that will include both male and female members,” he said to applause from lawmakers.
The former educator and administrator said his policies include priority government issues such as Security, the judicial system, the ongoing drought, reconciliation and talks with Somaliland (a region of northwestern Somalia that has unilaterally declared independence from the rest of Somalia).

“Other priority issues include democratization, elections, economy, good governance and accountability,” he added.
Many see his longstanding friendship with President Mohamud as a factor that could create harmony in their working relationships.
