Fana Hagos Berhane (PhD) has been appointed President of Mekelle University, replacing Professor Fetien Abay, who has served as acting president of the university since mid-September 2020.

According to Abdulkedir, her applicants included Professor Fetien Abay, the university’s former incumbent president, who applied for the Post, but her application could not be processed as she was out of the country at the moment. However, when asked about the university’s relationship with the regional interim administration, the deputy academic president said: “With the exception of issues such as community service, there is no major involvement in the interim administration of Tigray or any influence on the appointment of Dr. Fana replaces the incumbent president. “
According to her profile, Fana Hagos (PhD) received her bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Addis Ababa, her master’s degree from the University of Free Africa and she received her Ph.D. She studied at Warwick University in the UK and was a postdoctoral fellow at the African Academy of Sciences in Nairobi, Kenya.
Previously, she worked as a prosecutor for the Tigray Regional Justice Bureau and was an assistant professor. He studied law at Mekelle University and was Director of the University’s Gender Studies Institute and Dean of the College of Law and Governance for 12 years. Prior to her appointment as President of Mekelle University, she served as President of the Tigray Region Supreme Court for four years and six months.
It should be recalled that Professor Fetien Abay came to be the Acting President of Mekelle University. She took over the position after long-time professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, who was released from his service on September 14th.
