News Update: Ethiopia police releases journalist Tesfalem

– The federal police in the capital Addis Ababa have released the journalist Tesfalem Woldyes from prison, a family member confirmed this to Addis Standard this morning.

Journalist Tesfalem, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Ethiopia Insider, an emerging online news outlet, went missing on Saturday October 2nd shortly after posting a video of Oromo youths releasing Oromo prisoners including Jawar Mohammed and protesting against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at an Irreechaa, the Oromo festival in the capital Addis Ababa.

On Monday police admitted they had arrested him but gave no reasons for his arrest.

Yesterday the global media watchdogs CPJ and RSF called for the release of Tesfalem, a prominent independent journalist with two decades of experience in journalism for various media organizations before he founded Ethiopia Insider in 2020.
