IG Mutyambai orders DCI to investigate Sakaja, Wavinya over degrees

Police Inspector Hillary Mutyambai has ordered criminal investigations into embattled Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Machakos gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti.

In the latest twist in the dramatic saga of the academic qualifications of Senator Sakaja, police now say Nairobi’s candidate for governor is under criminal investigation to determine the authenticity of his degree.

Mr Sakaja claims to have a Bachelor of Science in Management (external) from Teams University in Uganda.

In a statement on Saturday, police spokesman Bruno Shioso said that IG Mutyambai the Criminal Investigation Department ordered to examine scientific papers of Mr. Sakaja and Ms. Ndeti.

“The Inspector General of the NPS has instructed the Director, DCI, to carry out rapid investigations into the authenticity s and the relevant documentation submitted to the IEBC by the above two contenders for reasoning,” said Mr. Shioso.

This comes barely 24 hours after Senator Sakaja presented himself at DCI HQ, only to be turned away by detectives who said he was not a wanted man.

“DCI did not subpoena or arrest the Honorable Sakaja. He intervened after false reports that police were looking for him and then immediately turned him away,” DCI said Friday night.

Mr. Sakaja was also subpoenaed to appear before the Commission on University Education (CUE) on Monday to prove the authenticity of his degree.

Wiper Party gubernatorial candidate for Machakos is also under investigation for falsification after his academic credentials were questioned by two voters.

In a petition before the IEBC Disputes Committee, Mr Gideon Ngewa Kenya and Mr Kisilu Mutisya are demanding that the electoral body revoke the authorization of Ms Ndeti over allegations that she was not qualified to run for the position.

In the complaint, voters have alleged that the Wiper Democratic Party candidate does not have a legally required university degree.

Mrs. Ndet i claims to have obtained a Bsc in Computer Science from South Bank University Londo n.

MP for the Kathiani constituency and Deputy Minister for Youth and Sport, running for the third time for the top district post in Machakos after unsuccessfully applying in 2013 and 2017.
