Editor’s Note: The statement of former Lagos State Governor and National Chair of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to run for the presidency in 2023 has continued to evoke mixed reactions among Nigerians.
How do you react to Tinubu’s declaration to run for the presidency?
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the jagaban of Borgu, is entitled to aspire to the highest office in the country. His quest to serve Nigeria is consistent with the philosophy of equal opportunity for all. He has served Nigeria as a senator, governor and party leader.
Why I am concerned about Tinubu’s health and aging
His experience in all fields should be in the leadership of the nation come into play. My only concern is whether he is physically, mentally and emotionally stable for the assignment. As you can see, age is affecting him negatively and he does not look fit and agile to take on the gauntlet as restoring Nigeria’s unity, confidence and prosperity poses a great challenge.
< p class="align-left">His party has not done well in running the affairs of our dear nation. There is a loss of confidence in the party to live up to expectations, especially as it has failed in its three chosen responsibilities – fighting corruption, insecurity and economic prosperity. If he were fit as a fiddle, maybe he could recreate the magic of Lagos.
Some people think he would be a good president if he finally got the election As for his background, do you see him as the kind of leader Nigerians want today?
I have my reservations about such claims of a particular category by Nigerians. As I mentioned earlier, Asiwaju is no longer the same as when he served Lagos State. If you add 22 years to his age when first elected governor, you will agree that Nigeria is diverse and populated, occupying a land mass difficult for a man of his age and stature to traverse. His health is not improving, he has been in and out of hospitals lately and is not showing a high level or any signs of fitness.
He is expected to spend a lot of time , energy and acumen when he needs to succeed as President. Is he ready for such a gigantic task? We are not ready to have another Buhari who spends little time addressing national concerns. I pray that he will be reinvigorated to meet the challenges of leading our nation. I have nothing against him, but I have my doubts.
Former Nigerian State Governor Babangida Aliyu said recently that your party – PDP – has agreed to rezone Ticket North, but his claim was later debunked by the party’s leadership. Do you support the idea that the 2023 presidential candidate should come from the north?
Babangida Aliyu is a senior and a key stakeholder of our party. He attends nightly and official meetings. Perhaps at one of their meetings such decisions were made without being written down with pen and paper.
Don’t forget that the current members of the National Working Committee are new to the party administration and I doubt that they have received proper handoff logs from the right source and are adequate and sufficiently informed of any outstanding issues or decisions made earlier in various forums.
Da however, the party has refuted such an allegation, we await his further evidence of the existence of such understanding or decision. It is important that such an important and tiresome problem is solved much earlier, so that progress can be made much faster. No place should be given to disillusionment or confusion, lest the party be pushed back. We look forward to resolving any outstanding issues early so that our party can reposition itself for the challenges ahead.
It is believed that the people of the Southeast are just playing Regional Policies Unlike in the South West, based on this, do you sign the Igbo Presidency in 2023?
Whatever kind of politics you pursue, you are part of a federation, the one constitution that guarantees everyone a wealth of opportunities. You should throw your hat in the ring, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get it. In 1999 Chief Dr. Alex Ekwueme would have been president if it weren’t for the gang of generals.
I believe in the Igbo presidency
Dr. Sylvester Ugo would since have been a running mate for the late Dr. Bashir Tofa and Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, a running mate from President Muhammadu Buhari, ascended the seat when their directors were elected. I believe in the Igbo presidency, but they hardly want to get involved in politics. Trade, commerce and industry are their main concerns, but Anyim Pius Anyim gives the challenge a good fight.
Wherever the President is from, three things matter to me: patriotism, competence and efficiency and, above all, fairness and justice towards all. He must be a brother’s keeper. Our main problem is leadership, if we get it right all things will fall into place. Most importantly, the next president must be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Orji Kalu says APC belongs to Nigerians, not Tinubu
It was reported that Kalu made the comment during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, January 13.
He made the comment days after Tinubu President Muhammadu Buhari in visited the Presidential Mansion. Aso Rock, telling him about his ambition to run for the presidency in the 2023 general election.
