In the post, Zubair wrote:

The truck driver’s exploit has earned him the recognition and commendation of the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists .

The Chairman and Secretary of the NUJ, Comrades Michael Ikeogwu and Patrick Ochei, noted in a joint statement that Otarigho is a newly married young man.

In the statement Punch saw, Michael and Ochei said that the driver “had decided not to be selfish about the affairs of his life and family, but had decided to live his own life to prevent a major fire accident that could have thrown the whole state into chaos, which isn’t happening.”

Part of the statement read:

“The tanker driver, Mr. Otarigho, decided in this wretched state of mind of dying in the fire until he drove the fire engulfed truck out of the human populated area to the river.

“We give glory to Almighty God that he did not die but survived to tell his heroic story.”

“With that in mind, we call on the Federal Government, the Delta State Government and of course the Ughelli North Local Government to celebrate this young man and give him his due to compensate.

“His unique effort had saved the state so much else had the incident happened the state would have counted its human losses and property damage.

“On ours As a union and as a mirror of society, young Otarigho is our Man of the Year and in due course we will give him the honor of showing that to the world sen there are still patriotic ordinary Nigerians. People like him are the ones who really deserve media awards. We’re really proud of him.”
