BREAKING: Over 20 Feared Killed In Port Harcourt Church Stampede, Nigerians React – Legit.ng

  • More than 20 people are feared dead in a stampede just before the start of a program organized by a new generation church in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
  • Although the church is located in the metropolitan GRA axis, the program was at the Polo Club in the Rivers state capital to accommodate the usual large congregation
  • Meanwhile , crowds swarmed the venue as the church invited members of the public to come for its fourth anniversary and receive gifts and food

At least 21 people are feared dead in an early morning raid on a New Generation Church in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Daily Trust reports that the incident unfolded during the fourth edition during the distribution of gifts and food at the church.

The witness said that at 6:30 a.m. Friday 27 s some of the invitees this morning, Saturday 28 May, for an event scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

A witness provided crucial details

The witness said that some people, who were due to hold a sports session, arrived around 8am and opened the small gate, allowing the surging crowd a chance to gain entry, prompting a stampede, The Punch also reported.

“The incident happened this morning. The church invited people to its fourth edition of food and gift distribution. Some have been coming since Friday, many others as early as Saturday at 6.30 am.

“The active athletes opened the small gate and the pushing crowd wanted to gain access through the small gate and was trampled on. I counted around 21 dead on the ground.”

He said many victims were taken to an unknown hospital in Port Harcourt.

Police

Meanwhile, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer Iringe Grace Koko said she was on her way to the scene of the incident to get accurate information.

“I am issuing a press statement on the incident. It would be released soon.”

Kano blast death toll rises to 9 as NEMA begins rescue operations

In another development, the The death toll in a gas explosion in Kano State on Tuesday, May 17 has risen to nine, according to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

The ministry announced this in a tweet spotted by Legit.ng on its verified official Twitter handle.

National Emergency Agency (NEMA) Director General Mustapha Habib Ahmed, also arrived at the scene of the incident, according to the tweet.

Apongbon Fire Outbreak: Lagos Announces Eko Bridge Closure

According a statement by the Lagos State Government said the bridge would be closed indefinitely.

In the statement it reads:

“TRAVEL WARNING: The Eko Bridge has been closed indefinitely by the Lagos State Government due to a fire that broke out in Apongbon in the early hours of this morning.”

It is recalled that on Wednesday, March 23, Legit.ng reported the fire outbreak that affected some nearby vehicles with no fatalities.
