On Wednesday, July 5, unidentified gunmen broke into the National Youth shelter Service Scheme Corpers at Udo Ekong ein Ekwere Street, Information Drive in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, attacking female inmates.
The Punch reports that the Gunmen stormed the area at 1:00 am on tricycles carting away valuables such as laptops, cellphones and cash.
Details emerge
Some of the corps members who spoke to journalists the next morning lamented that despite the cry for help, there was no help anywhere during the attack.
Corpers recount sad ordeal
One of the corp members, who identified himself as Emeka Emmanuel, said:
“They came on a tricycle which was popularly known as Keke, and started operations immediately. They shone high-intensity torchlight everywhere and charged at every door with heavy iron, threatening to shoot us if we didn’t cooperate.”
A female corps member, that too On condition of anonymity, while fighting back tears, she said her phones, laptop and cash were forcibly taken after the crooks forced entry into her room through the back door.
She explained:
“You know, at this time of the night most of us women used to sleep naked and the suddenness of the attack caught us off guard. They shone the flashlight through the window and threatened to shoot if the door wasn’t opened quickly.”
Another colleague complained:
” I have never heard of this anywhere in Nigeria, not even in the North, where insecurity is highest that corpsers could be deliberately attacked, harassed and robbed by criminals at gunpoint. Is it because we are not from Akwa Ibom that no one could hear our screams and come to rescue us?”
Bandits attack Buhari’s convoy in Katsina State
The incident comes hours after gunmen attacked an “advance team” of presidential aides in Katsina, injuring two people.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman , Garba Shehu, confirmed the attack in a statement Tuesday, July 5.
The attack occurred near Dutsinma, Katsina State, when the car convoy carrying the Vanguard team of security forces, protocol and media officials was stopped before Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah.
Residents raise alarm as terrorists attack Kuje prison in Abuja
Gunmen suspected of being terrorists are currently attacking, according to Sahara Reporters Kuje Correctional Facility in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.
Several sources cited in the report said the gunmen entered the facility around 10:00 p.m., but security forces were able to repel the attack.
One of the sources said:
“Can you hear the shot, we are under serious attack.”
