Following the assassination of Deborah Samuel by some who claimed she was guilty of blasphemy and the growing call for her killers to be released and arrested, Governor Aminu Tambuwal has made a tough decision .
The governor on Saturday, May 14, declared a 24-hour metropolitan-wide curfew amid widespread protests and unrest amid the effort by the police to maintain law and order, reports The Cable.
As reported by Channels TV, a statement from the governor on the current development reads:
“Following the sad incident that occurred at Shehu Shagari College of Education on Thursday and as a result of developments in the metropolis (Sokoto) from this morning to afternoon, by the powers conferred on me by Section 176 (2) of the Constitution of the federal transfer s were issued by Nigeria and Sections 1 and 4 of the Public Order Law and Section 15 of the Sokoto State Peace Preservation Law, I hereby declare a curfew in the (Sokoto) metropolis of the Municipality of Sokoto for the next 24 hours with immediate effect.< /blockquote>
“I appeal to the good people of Sokoto State to kindly continue to observe law and order and calm (the) unrest that is currently reigning in the metropolis. Everyone should please go home in the interest of peace and comply with this measure in view of restoring calm, law and order to the state.
“It is not in anyone’s interest for us, a breakdown of law and to be in order. I therefore appeal for restraint and for respect and respect for the rule of law.”
