Flashback: Dogonyaro’s coup speech that overthrew Buhari on August 27, 1985

It is no longer new that Joshua Dogonyaro, former commander of the monitoring group of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOMOG), is dead.

Dongorayo was one of the top guys in Nigeria’s military era. When Muhammadu Buhari, the then military head of state, was overthrown, he was given the task of reading the coup speech that Ibrahim Babangida brought to The Cable on August 27, 1985.

“I, Brigadier Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro of the Nigerian Army, hereby make the following statement on behalf of my colleagues and members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Compatriots, the military intervention at the end of 1983 was greeted with unprecedented enthusiasm by the nation. Nigerians agreed they accepted the intervention and hopefully looked forward to progressive changes for the better. Almost two years later it has become clear that the fulfillment of expectations is not imminent.

“Since this generation of Nigerians, and indeed future generations, have no country other than Nigeria, we could not remain passive and a small group of individuals misused power to the detriment of our national aspirations and interests.

“No nation can ever make significant progress in its development if there is no cohesion in the government hierarchy. where it has become clear that positive action by political decision-makers is hindered because the body lacks a common objective.

“It is evident that the nation would be at risk of continual misdirection. We are currently facing that danger. In such a situation, action should and must be taken to halt further damage. Exactly we did.

“The Nigerian public was to believe that the slow action of the federal government under the leadership of Major General Muhammadu Buhari was due to the enormous problems left by the last civil administration.

“Although it is true that a lot of the problems were left behind by the last civilian government. The real reason for the very slow process, however, lies in the lack of unanimity of purpose within the ruling body. motivates reflections on power play. The government body, the Supreme Military Council, was therefore gradually dismissed through the actions of a few selected members who are tasked with the daily implementation of the guidelines and decisions of the SMC.

“The concept of collective leadership has been stubbornly dismissed and replaced unsolicited unilateral action, thereby destroying the principles on which the government came to power. All efforts to advise the leadership met with stubborn opposition and were viewed as a challenge to authority or infidelity / blockquote>

“Thus, the scene was created for the systematic elimination of what was termed opposites. All energies of domination were directed oppose this imaginary opposition rather than effective leadership.

“The result of these misdirected efforts is now very evident across the country. The government has started to drift. The economy doesn’t seem to be getting better as we see inflation rising every day.

“The nation’s scarce resources are again being wasted on unproductive endeavors. The government has distanced itself from the people and the aspirations and aspirations of the people, which are constantly reflected in the media, have been ignored.

“This is because some people have entrusted themselves with the right to make decisions. All these events have shown that the current composition of the leadership of our country cannot justify the continued filling of this position.

“In addition, the original goals and programs of action that should have been implemented since the Buhari government took office in January 1984 have been betrayed and rejected. The current state of uncertainty and stagnation must not degenerate into oppression and retrograde development .

“We feel obliged to use the resources and means at our disposal to restore hope in the minds of Nigerians and to renew the pursuit of new renewals.” A better future. We are not Prophets of doom for our beloved country Nigeria. We therefore count on the cooperation and support of all.

“I appeal to you, compatriots, and especially to my fellow armsmen, to refrain from any act that may lead to unnecessary violence and bloodshed will guide us. Rest assured that our actions are in the interests of the nation and the armed forces.

“In order to enable the introduction of a new order, the following bodies will be dissolved immediately until further announcements are made: (a) The Supreme Military Council (b) The Federal Executive (c) The National Council of States. All seaports and Airports are closed, all borders remain closed.

Lagos and all state capitals until further notice. All military commanders ensure that law and order are effectively maintained. Further announcements will be made in due course. God bless Nigeria. “< / Blockquote>
