Just In: Ogun Workers Threaten Showdown With Abiodun, Begin Indefinite Strike – Legit.ng

  • Ogun State workers will begin an indefinite strike among organized labor today over the state government’s refusal to meet their demands
  • The Der Chair of the NLC, Ogun State Chapter, Emmanuel Bankole, made this disclosure while noting that efforts to get the government to comply with its demands have yielded no positive results
  • Bankole further claimed that workers would continue to keep the state in industrial lockdown until their demands are met

On Monday, The 27-state declared an indefinite strike over the pitiful plight of workers in the state, Daily Trust reports public schools.

The plight of the workers

The workers accused Abiodun of failing to pay 21 months’ salary, eight years of which was unpaid statutory holiday pay, and violating the State Pension Reform Act 2006 (amended 2013) in implementing the contributory pension scheme, The Sun newspaper added.

Their grievances were contained in a June 21 letter to Governor Abiodun.

The letter was co-signed by Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) State Chair Emmanuel Bankole ; Union Congress (TUC) Chairman Akeem Lasisi and Joint Bargaining Committee (JNC) Chairman Isa Olude.

Union workers begin industrial action

After the ultimatum expired, labor leaders on Monday afternoon addressed the workers at the Secretariat of State Arcade compound, Oke – Mosan, Abeokuta, where they declared an indefinite strike.

The NLC -Leader said the government has failed to give in to Labor Party calls for negotiations.

Bankole said the indefinite strike action would allow the government to change its mind and call for a dialogue on the Industrial action.

Bankole said:

“Anyone who reports for duty tomorrow (Tuesday) is a traitor and he never takes it well been a traitor.”

NLC criticizes lawmakers over proposed legislation to stop health workers from going on strike

Leadership of Nigeria’s Labor Congress condemned the move by members of the House of Representatives to pass a bill that would ban industrial action by healthcare workers.

The National President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said the bill, sponsored by Simon Atige, an Enugu State legislator, targets gag healthcare workers.

It has been reported that Atige will launch a had sponsored the Bill: ‘A Bill Amending the Commercial Disputes Act, Cap T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004’.
