The Nigerian Correctional Service has debunked reports that Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, was among the inmates who fled the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Center.
In a statement from national public relations officer Umar Abubakar, a Chief Superintendent of Corrections, the report of Peter’s alleged escape has been labeled a fabrication.
Given that the inmate is still in the safe custody of the service, Abubakar said , the unfounded Messages were brewed by troublemakers and intended only to mislead the public and create needless popular discontent.
“There is no doubt that the nation is going through a challenging time, which is unfortunately having an impact on prisons.”
“Therefore, if there is time to show diligence and patriotism, surely now is the time , than spreading baseless and unsubstantiated news.”
Following the attack on Kuje Prison Center on Tuesday, July 5, reports spread across various social media platforms that Peter was among the inmates who fled the facility.
There were also fake reports that a suspended Deputy Police Commissioner, Abba Kyari, is being tried for his involvement with a drug cartel l escaped from the Kuje facility.
The report stating that Kyari escaped along with other high-ranking former government officials was also debunked by Abubakar.
While some inmates managed to escape during the attack on the facility by ISWAP members, Abubakar said the NCS is taking all measures to recapture the escaped inmates.
He also confirmed that Correctional Facilities Inspector General Haliru Nababa would like to reassure the public of his unwavering determination to improve public safety.
This, Abubakar said, would be achieved by promoting safe and humane detention of criminals in detention.

Peter was presented by the federal government before the Supreme Court in Abuja charged with murder.
The lawsuit was filed against Nwachukwu by the Federation Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Justice.

The mother of the deceased, Madam Caroline Madu, appeared before the FCT Supreme Court to testify against Peter.
In her testimony, she said re betrayed, that Peter, who is her in-laws, used to hit her daughter (victim), s even if she was pregnant.
