Asaba – Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has offered his condolences to his Ondo State counterpart, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, which killed as many as 40 worshipers on Sunday June 5.
Okowa condemned the insidious act and called on security agents to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The message of condolences was included in a statement from his spokesman, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, expressing shock and sadness at the heinous killing of innocent believers at Owo Church.
Part of the statement read:
“We have received news of the horrific attack on St Francis Catholic Church in Owo which resulted in the deaths of many believers.
“We join all well-meaning Nigerians in condemning this unprovoked attack on a house of worship and call on the security authorities to step up their efforts to arrest those responsible and hold those responsible to account.
“The attack is not only barbaric, it is an affront to the Church of Christ and we stand in solidarity with the people of Ondo at this difficult time.
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I offer my condolences to my dear brother, Governor, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, and the people of Ondo State for the horrific attack on innocent believers in Owo on Sunday
“My heartfelt condolences also go to the families of the deceased, to the entire Catholic Church and to the people of the Kingdom of Owo.”
Governor Akeredolu responds….
Prior to this, Governor Akeredolu had vowed to hunt down the attackers of St. Francis Catholic Church in the city of Owo.
The governor who defended the Visiting the crime scene said those who carried out the attack will pay for their crime.
The governor’s stance was contained in a statement by his chief press secretary, Richard Olatunde.
President Buhari condemns attack in Owo
President Muhammadu Buhari, for his part, condemned the heinous killing of believers in Ondo State.
The President said eternal mourning awaits those who committed the act, both here on earth as well as ultimately in the afterlife, and said:
“No matter what happens, this country will never yield to evil and evil people, and the darkness will never overcome the light.”
