Police announced on Wednesday that they had arrested eight suspects for the kidnapping and murder of 93-year-old Mr Defwan Dariye, father of former Plateau Governor Mr Joshua Dariye.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr Frank Mba, announced this during a media briefing in Abuja.
He said the ninety-year-old was kidnapped by the suspects and left in a very unsanitary state for eight days with no contact with the outside world According to him, after lengthy negotiations, the kidnappers were paid a ransom of N10 million and he was murdered instead of released.
Mba said the incident had happened in June 2020, adding that after the victim’s body was recovered, Intelligence Response Unit detectives and other police investigators took action to uncover the perpetrators m Ache that led to the arrest of the eight prime suspects who played an important role in the kidnapping and murder of the ex-governor’s father.
“All but a very few suspects came from the same village in the community of Bokkos as the murdered victim.
“This perhaps explains why they made the very evil and costly decision to murder the old man,” he said.
He said that Crime was initiated by the oldest suspect, who identified the victim, recruited men to carry out the operations, and distributed the ransom.
Mba said three suspects were in a border town between Nasarawa and South Africa on August 28th Taraba has also been arrested after months of intense surveillance.
He said the suspects were charged with illicit procurement, distribution and sale of weapons to end users, mainly criminals, kidnappers, bandits, terrorists and acted armed robbers.
According to him, the suspects were arrested after agents of the intelligence team got into an operation that was intelligence-driven and clinical.
Mba said a total of 26 AK47 magazines , an AK49 rifle and its magazines and 14 live ammunition for the AK47 rifle were seized from the suspects.
