The Edo Police Department says it has arrested one of its employees who fired a shot in Benin on Friday that killed a passenger.
SP Kontongs Bello, Police Officer (PPRO) des Commandos announced in a statement in Benin on Saturday.
Bello stated that the officer belonging to the commandos anti-kidnap and cybercrime unit was trying to arrest a murder suspect when he was Fired a murder shot to restrain the escaping suspect.
He said the shot unfortunately hit the thigh of one of the passengers in a moving vehicle.
He said the victim was taken to the Edo Specialist Hospital, where he later died.
“Unfortunately, the bullet hit one of the occupants of a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam. He was taken to the Edo Specialist Hospital, where he gave up the ghost.
“The erring officer is going to an administrative procedure that determines his guilt,” the statement reads.
The PPRO noted that Police Superintendent Philip Agbadu was saddened by the incident and expressed condolences to the deceased’s family.
He added that Ogbadu had directed the Criminal Investigation Commissioner to conduct a discreet investigation, to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
According to him, the CP assures the public that he will not hesitate to deal with any faulty and overzealous official who acts unprofessionally in the performance of his duty.
He urged the victim’s family and the public to remain calm for a full investigation.
However, Bello announced that the murder suspect had been established in connection with the arrest Death of a Bright Orikose was taken last December.
