“On the other hand, the government disapproves of reports of wanton destruction of property visited by injured soldiers in the community. The indiscriminate burning of innocent citizens’ homes and businesses was not an appropriate response, as two injustices will never make a right. The government has good reason to believe that there is more to the unfortunate event than meets the eye.
“As a result, His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodinma, Executive Governor of Imo State, has a high-level investigation into the incident to uncover the cause of the crisis and the associated loss of life and property.
“The government therefore advises both parties to exercise extreme restraint and keep the peace while the investigation continues.”
The state government expressed its deep condolences to the family of the dead soldier, but sympathized with the victims of the crisis.
Traditional rulers were shot at a meeting in Imo
In a similar development, armed men opened fire on traditional rulers during a meeting in Njaba parish, Imo state.
