Due to the federal government order, telecom companies in Nigeria such as MTN, Airtel, GLO and 9mobile have banned over 70 million subscribers from making calls because they did not use their SIM card with the National Identity Number (NIN).
However, recent developments suggest that some Nigerians who have linked their SIM card to their NIN are also experiencing difficulties have made calls.
After the SIM has been linked to NIN, subscribers should receive confirmation from the telecommunications providers that the process was complete and successful.
However, some mobile users have said that after connecting their SIM card to NIN, they did not receive an answer as to whether the operation was successful or not.
Some also said that they received replies that the Verk pairing was successful, but their SIMs remain locked for outgoing calls.
According to BBC News Pidgin, a senior official working with one of the telcos , listed the reasons why subscribers might have such problems.
- Incomplete registration
- Computer errors
- Associating NIN with too many SIM cards
- Poor backend integration of NIMC
- Network problem
What to to do is if your SIM cards remain blocked after linking to NIN
The unnamed telecoms official quoted by the BBC said affected subscribers could contact officials at the telecoms companies/service centres to register their complaints.
He said the telcos don’t want subscribers’ SIM cards to be blocked because that too loss of revenue for them, adding that they need as many customers as possible.
The head of the National also reportedly confirmed to the Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Kano, what a telco official said.
He was quoted as referring affected subscribers to telco officials to complain.
According to him, the telcos will give them letters to forward to NIMC while the Commission’s database team takes them from there and corrects the error.
< h2>FG orders NIN weekend registration nationwide
In a related development, NIMC has announced the start of weekend NIN registration at all NIN registration centers nationwide.
According to the Commission will limit the weekend registration to those who have their NIN noc h have not received to do so within the timeframe given by the federal government before enforcement of the NIN-SIM linkage begins.
The Minister for Communications and digital economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, urged citizens and legal residents to take advantage of weekend registration.
