‘Bheki Cele must go’ — SA shocked at rising crime levels

Recent crime statistics have led to calls for a redesign of the criminal justice system to ensure the safety of all South Africans.

Murder, sex offenses, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm are some of the Crimes on the rise.

Homicide increased 22.2%, sex offenses 13.7%, attempted homicide 24.8% and assault 18.1%. Combined assault and ordinary robbery increased by 17.6% and 13%, respectively.

Twitter users called on Police Minister Bheki Cele and the government to tackle crime. Others said Cele and his team should resign or be fired for failing at their jobs.

Crimes against children were of particular concern as SA monitors Child Protection Week.

The Central Police of Cape Town Station topped the list of the 30 police stations with the highest number of serious crimes in the first quarter of the year. From January to March, 2,653 serious crimes were registered, an increase of 54.2% compared to 2021.
