A mountain fire near Hermanus in the Western Cape is 95% contained, with only one building destroyed so far, the Overstrand community reported on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire broke out on state land above on Friday Kleinmond and destroyed about 4,000 hectares of fynbos. It briefly threatened the upscale resort of Arabella between Kleinmond and Hermanus. Fire teams took care of flares and hotspots.
“Air forces have been bombing the area since this morning and will continue to mop up operations with the support of their relief team,” said Overstrand Mayor Annelie Rabie.
< Farmers helped fire brigade teams contain the fire, and a backfire in the mountains prevented damage to farmland.
Local government, environmental affairs and development planning of Western Cape, MEC Anton Bredell praised everyone involved in the fire brigade, including city staff Cape Town, the Western Cape Disaster Management, Overberg and Overstrand Townships, CapeNature, Working on Fire, and Volunteer Fire Brigade units.
He said the province had built its fire management resources and systems over the past 10 years, creating 90% of the fires were extinguished within the first hour.
