Police Minister Bheki Cele said he had nothing to do with the arrest of Malesela Teffo, the lawyer representing four of the five men accused of murdering former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Teffo was arrested Thursday before the Pretoria High Court, apparently for failing to appear in court on another matter in Hillbrow.
When he was arrested in the courtroom, Teffo said: “They are arresting me because they don’t want me to do it in this case. Bheki Cele doesn’t want me in this case. That’s why.”
However, Cele told eNCA Thursday night that he only heard of the arrest when his spokesman Lirandzu Themba informed him Thursday afternoon.
Cele said Themba later called him and told him that a video was circulating of Teffo accusing Cele of being behind his arrest.
“I don’t know anything about it. I’ve asked the National (Police) Commissioner to find out what happened and give me a report,” Cele said.
In a statement, National Police Commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola said he was there an arrest warrant has been issued against Teffo. He said he had asked Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela to provide a report on the matter.
