The Churchill Dam is the last to be exhausted and it was decided to reduce consumption to avoid failure of the dam due to over-exploitation.
The NMB’s multi-party political oversight committee met on Thursday to receive a report from the intervention team appointed by Minister for Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu.
The report covered a range of issues related to the drought and the water crisis, aimed at avoiding taps.
The main focus is on tackling the consumption trend, which is now at 60 megaliters per day is (Ml /d) above the target of 230 Ml/d.
The subway does not take water from the Impofu- Dam because a barge is relocated. Once the barge is ready, the Impofu will start delivering 30 Ml/day again.
For the past week, Churchill has transported most of Impofu’s shortfall and is now also seriously depleted.
Amatola Water Board Chair and Intervention Team Leader Pam Yako recommended that the committee immediately cut Churchill’s supply to reduce consumption and prevent dam failure due to over-extraction prevent.
The recommendation, which was not rejected by the parties present, provides for funding from Churchill to be increased from 60 Ml/d to 25 Ml< /em>/d is reduced.
By reducing consumption, the Churchill Dam is expected to last five more days, otherwise it will be dry by Tuesday.
This will Affecting the southern and western suburbs of NMB, including parts of New Brighton and Kwazakhele. Residents in these areas will face intermittent water supplies due to reduced withdrawal.
The subway will supplement water supplies in these areas with standpipe collection points, rainwater tanks and water tanker trucks.
Initially, nine of the 24 municipal water intake points will be activated for 24-hour operation.
These measures will come into effect on Saturday and are expected to last at least seven days.
Meanwhile, the subway is stepping up citywide installation of water demand control systems, and users are encouraged to reduce their water consumption to below 50L per person per day.
