Cleanup under way as floods subside in George

The flooding has subsided and the clean-up has officially begun, the community of George in the Western Cape announced on Monday evening.

George chief fire and civil protection officer, Neels Barnard, said the community had all hands Fully serviced -related issues related to heavy rains and flash floods across the city on Monday.

According to the municipality, civil engineering services registered 139mm of rain in the water treatment facilities above Denneoord by 4:00 p.m. .

“The community worked with other emergency services and social services to address the flooding holistically,” said Barnard.

He said the morning rush hour traffic is on the main arteries into the city , including CJ Langenhoven (from Oudtshoorn) and the R102 from the airport to York Street.

Madiba Drive (formerly Saasveld Road) is closed above the Meyer Street intersection. A stretch of road is impassable.

Barnard said that social development in meetinghouses in the affected communities is in readiness for shelter, mattresses and blankets, meals and toiletries.

“So far, most of those affected have chosen to stay with their family or close to their home in order to protect their belongings. There have been several weather-related electrical issues that will continue to be addressed as they arise. Since rain and thunder are a huge risk for electricians, repairs were sometimes delayed, “he said.
