Cop allegedly supplied inmates with dagga and booze, leading to rape and assault in cells

A Limpopo police sergeant was suspended for allegedly delivering alcohol and dagga to inmates in detention cells at Phalaborwa Police Station on New Year’s Eve.

Provincial police said the 39-year-old was suspended after inmates were reportedly suspended he got drunk after consuming the substances and allegedly started attacking and rape other inmates in the cells.

“Six cases of assault and two cases of rape have been opened. Two suspects, aged 23 and 39, one imprisoned for murder and the other for robbery, were subsequently arrested and charged with rape and assault by the GBH, “said Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The police superintendent of Limpopo, Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe has assured that the public police detention cells are being managed in accordance with existing internal guidelines.

Hadebe said what happened at Phalaborwa Police Station was an isolated one The incident was handled internally to ensure that firm and appropriate sanctions are imposed on the officers.

The inmates appeared in Phalaborwa District Court on Friday.

Their cases were on postponed to January 18th.
