Cops bust ‘Eskom employees’ with stolen copper cables worth R540,000

Free State Police arrested two suspected Eskom employees after they were found in Welkom in possession of a large amount of copper cables.

Police spokesman Capt Stephen Thakeng said the Welkom K9 unit was on patrol , when she noticed an Eskom branded bakkie on Lindsay Road with copper cable on the back.

“The bakkie was approached and two Eskom employees were asked for documents regarding the possession of such a large amount of copper cable”, Thakeng said.

He said it was discovered that the copper cables were stolen from an Eskom workshop in town. This was confirmed by the manager, he said.

The two employees, aged 38 and 40, were arrested for the alleged stolen copper cable. Thakeng said the seized 170-meter cable was valued at approximately ZAR 540,000.
