Correctional supervision and suspended sentences for Parys farmers guilty of beating farmworkers

Three of the five farmers in Parys found guilty of attacking two farm workers who later died of their injuries in hospital were given suspended sentences on Friday.

The three, Cornelius Logberg , Lodewikus van der Westhuizen and Gert van Vuuren, were sentenced to three years in prison with full probation.

The two oldest farmers, Gert van der Westhuizen and Anton Logberg, were sentenced to correctional facilities.

< Gert van der Westhuizen was also sentenced to pay R20,000 to each of the deceased's families as he had already offered compensation. The money should be transferred by October 1st.

In 2016, Simon Tjixa and Simon Jubeba were brutally attacked by the farmers after they were accused of attacking their then employer Loedie van der Westhuizen. < / p>

Van Zyl said the criminal conviction reports presented to the court showed that the five did not pose a threat to society and that everyone played a positive role in their respective communities.

The NPA informed the court of its intention to appeal the judgments.

In their arguments for the conviction, the state argued that it preferred to impose direct imprisonment because of the seriousness of the crimes committed by the defendants.
