Couple mistaken for hippo shot at while fishing

A 77-year-old suspect who allegedly shot a couple fishing along the Mughal River next to a property in Rietspruit in the Limpopo has claimed he shot a hippopotamus.

He was arrested for attempted murder, police spokesman Lt. Col. Mamphaswa Seabi said.

A 38-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound while her partner managed to hide and brief police and emergency services about the incident, which occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

“The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, whereupon the police investigation was initiated. The arrested suspect said he shot the animals (hippos). Police confiscated two rifles, a revolver, a pistol and two airguns during the arrest,” Seabi said.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe urged community members to use firearms responsibly.

He urged those affected by the incident to remain calm and allow the police space to conduct their investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the district court on Thursday appear in Lephalale.
