Court recording snafu delays Babita Deokaran murder trial

The bail hearing of the six men charged with the Gauteng Health Department’s murder of Babita Deokaran has been postponed.

Phakamani Hadebe, Zita Hadebe, Nhlangano Ndlovu, Sanele Mbele, Siphiwe Mazibuko and Phakanyiswa Dladla appeared shortly before the Johannesburg District Court on Tuesday for murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The men are accused of murdering Deokaran outside their home south of Johannesburg in August .

Deokaran was instrumental in whistling the alleged corruption in connection with the procurement of personal protective equipment against Covid-19 by the department.

The lawyer of the defendant, Shafique Sarlie , said technical difficulties with the court’s audio recorder meant the case had to be rescheduled.
