The number of sex offenses reported to police increased by 13.7% in the first three months of the year to 13,799, up 1,666 from the same point last year.
Quarterly crime statistics are reported by the Minister of Police Bheki Cele announced Friday midday after the preliminary report was presented to Parliament in the morning.
The statistics compare lockdown level 1 this year to lockdown level 3 in 2021.
The Statistics only include information reported to the police.
Rape cases increased 13.7% to 10,818, an increase of 1,300 from the same time last year.
Sexual assaults stood at 2,165 (up 13.4%), attempted sexual assault at 547 (up 26.3%) and sexual contact offenses at 269, up 1.1% from the same time last year.
