Eastern Cape Black Fishers’ Association chair killed outside Gqeberha home

Eastern Cape Black Fishers’ Association chairman Xola Ngcangca was gunned down outside his home at KwaDwesi House in Gqeberha on Wednesday night.

Forests, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy said the murder of a man working to improve the lives of small-scale fishermen came as a shock to everyone in the fishing community.

“Mr Ngcangca was committed to transforming the fisheries sector and fighting to protect the rights of Fishermen of all levels. His contribution to a sector that has the potential to contribute to job creation and economic growth in communities along SA’s vast coastline is to be commended and will be sorely missed,” said Creecy.

Under Chaired by Ngcangca, the association has been involved in developing the knowledge and skills of small-scale fishermen, traders and processors to improve standards and management of fish and ultimately improve businesses.
