A man has appeared in the Eastern Cape on charges related to trafficking in commercial explosives allegedly used in ATM bombings and cash robberies.
Makalo Bartholomy Hadebe, 47, of Motsekula , appeared on Thursday before Matatiele Magistrate’s Court.
“This follows his arrest by the Serious Organized Crime Investigation Team, K9 Unit, Criminal Investigation and Public Order Police of the Hawks in East London on 8 June . Hawks spokeswoman Capt Yolisa Mgolodela said.
“The arrest follows an intelligence operation that involved two successful trial purchases of explosives. The confiscated explosives are believed to have been used in ATM (ATM) bombings and cash in transit (CIT) robberies.”
Hadebe’s case has been postponed to June 14 pending a bail application.
The head of Hawks Eastern Cape, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, commended the team for their efforts to root out crime and ATM robberies.
