Eight people have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killing of a police officer whose body was found in a field on Wednesday.
The body of Sergeant Siyabonga Enoch Shabalala, 38, who was abducted Tuesday at Windmill Park, Boksburg, was found in the Mapleton area.
Hawks spokesman Lt. Col. Philani Nkwalase said a passer-by herding cattle alerted authorities when he saw the body of a man near the R103 Old Heidelberg Road.
Shabalala, who was stationed at Hillbrow Police Station, was shot once in the stomach.
He was last arrested on Tuesday with his sister in seen on Moriri Street in Windmill Park They were approached by three armed men.
“The suspects allegedly pushed his sister out of the vehicle and shot the off-duty officer dead before driving away with the injured officer in his vehicle,” Nkwalase said.
The vehicle was recovered on Wednesday at Ulandolozo street, Mailula section, Vosloorus.
Three suspects — Tumelo Molapo, 30, Laurence Marindze, 28, and Aubrey Shabalala, 42 — were arrested Wednesday by the provincial investigative unit, Gauteng Hawk’s Serious Organized Crime Investigation Branch, arrested team, Highway Patrol, Johannesburg Metro Police K9, Ekurhuleni Metro Police and Johannesburg Flying Squad.
“They were allegedly found dismantling the hijacked vehicle and on the A firearm was also found at the site,” Nkwalase said.
The suspects appeared in Boksburg District Court on Friday on charges of possession of the hijacked vehicle and vehicle parts, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The case has been moved to Monday.
Nkwalase said five other suspects, between the ages of 23 and 30, were arrested Thursday by an integrated police team.

The five suspects are expected to appear in Boksburg Magistrates Court along with the other men on Monday. They face murder, kidnapping and charges
The South African Police Union (Sapu) described the incident as an attack on police officers by criminals and called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to stop the police killings
