Elderly woman survives after vehicle ‘rolled seven times’ down Sani Pass

An elderly woman was seriously injured after her vehicle rolled down Sani Pass “seven times” while attempting to negotiate an icy bend.

The KwaZulu-Natal Pass Incident , which links SA to Lesotho, took place last Tuesday and she was transported to Mokhotlong Hospital in the neighboring country.

Underberg Emergency Medical Service (UEMS) was contacted by the injured woman’s family to take her to a to transport special equipment in Pietermaritzburg.

“The elderly lady got into trouble in the icy pass corners. She told her husband and friend, who was traveling with her at the time, to get out of the vehicle before attempting to take the turn.

“Unfortunately, the vehicle skidded and slid off the side of the mountain . The vehicle rolled over seven times before coming to a stop in a creek between the hairpin bends,” said UEMS.

“The elderly patient was transported privately to Mokhotlong Hospital in Lesotho with serious injuries.

“The patient’s family contacted UEMS for assistance in evacuating the patient back to SA. A Netcare 911 helicopter was activated and encountered UEMS paramedics en route to safely airlift the patient to a specialized medical facility in Pietermaritzburg.”

On Tuesday, SnowReportSA issued an alert to people on its Facebook page those wanting to tackle the pass found out about the dangers that sometimes existed, “especially after snowfall when temperatures drop and melted snow turns to ice on the pass.”

“Especially the switchbacks near the top and especially on the right side of it gets shade most of the day in winter, can sometimes have days of ice and that makes the descent even more risky,” said SnowReportSA.

“If you are tackling the pass be sure to ask about the condition of the pass road from people you meet along the way, as well as at the SA border post below.

“The elderly person who was in the vehicle at the time of the accident was injured but as far as we know she is recovering. The accident could have been a lot worse so be safe with this demanding pass.”
