Eskom will now implement stage 1 load shedding on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. as the generation capacity recovered somewhat on Friday afternoon.
The utility had announced on Friday earlier, stage 2 to implement load shedding due to an ongoing shortage of generation capacity.
But it said its teams restarted a generation unit on Friday afternoon to start up at the Kusile and Majuba power plants. Meanwhile, one unit each at Camden and Kriel power stations has been shut down for repairs.
“Barring significant outages, there is a small chance that load shedding will occur over the weekend,” said Eskom.
It says 2,094 MW is available for scheduled maintenance while another 15,997 MW of capacity is unavailable due to outages.
“While we expect to see more generating units come back online over the weekend , Eskom calls on all South Africans to help us limit the impact of load shedding by reducing power consumption and turning off all non-essential devices.”
