Fish River Canoe Marathon confirms the double tragedy on the first leg. The organizers of the Fish River Canoe Marathon confirmed the death of two participants on the first stage of the race on Friday.
The 53-year-old Pretoria paddler Axel Marggraf died after falling from his K3 canoe in Soutpansdrift rapidly, while 31-year-old Dean Chiazzari of Amanzimtoti died after suffering a suspected heart attack after retiring from the race.
Fish River Canoe Marathon Chairman Roy Copeman speaks to families and friends of the two paddlers offered their condolences and said that the entire paddling community was shaken by the double tragedy.
“No words can describe the pain we are all feeling right now,” said Copeman.
He praised the race’s rescue and security personnel, who were quick to respond to both cases.
“Our security teams and divers, along with a group of volunteers who assisted and seconded on site, did great things Effort We risked their own lives to help locate and reach the missing paddler, “said Copeman.

Chiazzari withdrew from the race and was brought back to Cradock when he was suspected of having a heart attack.
