Five people were killed and two seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N1 South near Middelfontein in the Waterberg district of Limpopo on Friday.
The province’s Ministry of Transport and Community Safety announced this The N1 is closed between the Kranskop and Middelfontein tollbooths.
Ministry spokesman Mike Maringa said the vehicles would be diverted to the R101. The motorway was opened again at around 2 p.m.
“Allegedly a tire on a Toyota SUV burst and collided head-on with an oncoming Mini Cooper and Hyundai SUV,” said Maringa.
He said four people were killed in the impact and the fifth died on the way to the hospital.
“Four of the deceased were in the Avanza and the fifth victim in the Mini Cooper.”
