Five suspects were arrested for alleged involvement in the illegal mining of sand near Maake, Limpopo.
They were arrested in a targeted joint operation carried out on Tuesday by the Provincial Organized Crime Unit the Ministry of Minerals and Energy.
Police spokesman Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said suspects between the ages of 31 and 43 are expected to appear before the Maake Magistrate Court on Thursday.
He said the police had received a message about the suspects, who often illegally mine sand in the area without a permit.
“An operation was then carried out to arrest the suspects who were allegedly found when they loaded the sand onto a truck. The suspects could not give a valid reason and could not even produce a permit to mine the sand and were immediately arrested at the scene, “said Mojapelo.
A truck was confiscated during the arrest.
Mojapelo said the police investigation would continue.
