‘Flip-flop’ or change of mind? SA reacts to Malema supporting Hlophe to become next chief justice

EFF leader Julius Malema’s praise for John Hlophe, President of the Western Cape Judge, raised eyebrows among many and some on the internet call him “the ultimate flip-flop”.

In an interview with SABC News this week, Malema threw his weight behind Hlophe for the Chief Justice position, despite his previous stance on him.

Hlophe is among eight candidates, including attorney Busisiwe Mkhwebane and vice presiding judge Raymond Zondo, who have been nominated for the position to replace outgoing presiding judge Mogoeng Mogoeng.

Malema said Hlope was the “highest” qualified candidate on the “best legal mind” list.

“Hlophe is an honest, highly qualified [and] chairman of the most difficult department the judiciary in the Western Cape. It is not only the most difficult, but also the most racist split with a racist government, but the man survived, ”said Malema.

During a press conference in 2017, Malema swore that the EFF would remove Hlophe from justice for posing a threat, suggesting he was a “lazy Potato ”. .

“In the Western Cape, this Judge President Hlope is the most worrying thing about our judiciary,” said Malema at the time.

“Man Always gets those rotten potatoes that want to spoil the whole sack. It is the EFF’s job to get rid of those rotten potatoes, and we will do that in the judiciary too. The judiciary must never think that it is inviolable. ”

A lot of people participated on social media, and the video of Malema criticizing Hlophe made the rounds on Twitter.
