Former Joburg mayor Mpho Moerane has died

Former Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Moerane has died.

Moerane’s family confirmed that the former mayor and ANC leader in Johannesburg died exactly one week after his car accident.

< p>He had been at Netcare Milpark Hospital since last week where he remained unconscious until his death Wednesday.

Family spokesman Mike Maile said Moerane died Wednesday afternoon.

“We confirm that we lost our beloved Mpho this afternoon. We are saddened by his death,” Maile said.

This publication reported last week that Moerane was fighting for his life after a horrific accident.

Moerane was the leader of the ANC faction in Johannesburg, a position he has held since the local elections in 2021. Moerane was expected to run for the position of regional leader at next weekend’s ANC election conference in Johannesburg.

The conference was postponed last week after his car accident. It’s not clear if things will go ahead as planned.

He was the city’s mayor for a month after the death of then-mayor Jolidee Matongo in a car accident in southern Johannesburg.

Moerane is the third mayor of Johannesburg to die in the past year.

He was elected mayor a month before local elections last year after the death of Matongo.

Matongo also served as mayor for a month after being elected following the death of Geoff Makhubo, who died as a result of Covid-19.
