A baby was rescued after it was abducted by two knife-wielding men in a house robbery in Beverley, north of Johannesburg, Thursday afternoon.
Fidelity CEO Wahl Bartmann told TimesLIVE shortly after noon that a domestic servant was discovered two men in the garden of the house and closed the living room door.
One of the suspects kicked in the door claiming they had escaped from prison and wanted their phone and cash, he said. “They said they weren’t there to rob or hurt anyone. They took their phone with them, “said Bartmann.
He said the owner of the house fled to the bathroom and called her husband and the Fidelity Service.
” The suspects left into the bedroom, where they took cash from the resident’s wallet, “said Bartmann.
When Fidelity response officers arrived at the scene, the two men threatened to harm the baby if they got inside.
“You called for backup. The suspects, armed with knives, kidnapped the homeowner’s baby and ran towards the Jukskei River. An Uber driver saw the two suspects disappear with a child through the bush towards the river, ”he said.
Bartmann said officials were calling for additional reinforcements from properties in Kyalami, Helderfontein and Dainfern. The officers went to the river and looked in the bushes.
“Shortly after a report came in that two suspects with a baby had hijacked a vehicle in Helderfontein,” he said.
He said that officers went into pursuit and arrested the suspects after they crashed their vehicle near Diepsloot Mall.
A patrol officer in the Diepsloot area who did not want to be named witnessed how the suspects were caught.
He said that a white Toyota Hilux driving too fast lost control and crashed nearby.
“When it stopped, the JMPD- Fortunately, officials are not far away. When the two men saw the officers, they ran. They had a child and I thought they stole the child from a taxi only to find out it was a white baby and they were using it for their escape plan.
“They ran into the Bambanani mall and Parishioners caught them. They had knives and no weapons. They stabbed one of the guys from the community, ”he said.
He said the police arrived within five minutes and took the suspects away – before the community could attack them.
< p> Er24 said their paramedics and the provincial ambulance were called to the area.
“The paramedics examined the child and found that it was not injured. The child and her father were transported to a private hospital by the provincial ambulance service for further examination, “said ER24.
The baby and parents were safely reunited.
