The trial of the three men implicated in the murder of Hillary Gardee, daughter of former EFF General Secretary Godrich Gardee, began on Thursday after significant delays.
Protesting in the Nelspruit area had disrupted plans to bring the accused to justice.
Prosecutor Ntsika Mpolweni dropped a bombshell and said the state is adding a charge of conspiracy to murder all three accused.
Mpolweni told Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court he could not give details of who the three planned to kill.
“For security reasons, the state will not reveal the name of the person who was intended to be killed He said.
On Thursday, the proceeding of Sipho Mkhatshwa’s bail application was dropped. His co-defendants Philemon Lukhele and Albert Gama, who initially opposed filing for bail, were also expected to file a new application.
The trio have been sitting since Gardee’s death behind bars was discovered outside Mbombela in May – a few days after she went missing. The 28-year-old was raped and shot dead.
