The Gauteng Health Department has not ruled out sabotage behind fires in public hospitals.
In the early hours of Monday morning, a fire broke out at Steve Biko Hospital.
Dr. Gauteng MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi said it was bizarre that the department had to deal with fires almost every year.
In this regard, the possibility of intentional foul play had to be ruled out.
< p>The emergency room at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital recently reopened a year after a fire broke out at the facility.
Mokgethi told media on Monday that her department is getting to the root of the problem.
“Of course [we suspect] there is [sabotage], you can’t have fires year after year,” she said.
“It looks like it’s going to have to be every year at the Department of Health we deal with fires, but we do something about it. I’ll be getting a report this afternoon [Monday] specifically on the topic of Charlotte [Maxeke Hospital].
“At Steve Biko Hospital I got a report that the tents that were used, one of them was them caught fire. There were about five patients in the next tent, but they were evacuated without incident and the fire did not spread to the main hospital.
“The burnt tent was donated by the Old Mutual and I am still awaiting the incident report from the CEO for details and we are waiting for the police to conduct their own investigation into the cause of the fire. ”
