An officer from the Northwest Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (detection) has been arrested in connection with the illegal trade in rhinos.
The officer and the Security company owner was arrested Thursday afternoon, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment confirmed.
The men were arrested and a vehicle was seized by an interdepartmental team made up of members of the ministry’s Greens Scorpions in collaboration with the Hawks, the Dedect and the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation.
“The suspects are said to have transported 17 individual detached rhinoceros horns from the north Cape to North West in violation of the permit conditions of both provinces” said the national environment ministry.
“The men are also believed to have been involved in the rhinoceros horn trade by practicing permits used to conduct their illegal activities. ”
The suspects will appear before the Mmabatho District Court on Monday.
The investigation is ongoing.
